Moving into your first apartment is an exciting milestone for young adults and students. When I moved to a new state as a freshman, I struggled to figure out what to pack. I later realized I did not need to pack everything because many items could be purchased after arriving.

While decorating is fun, your first priority should be gathering first apartment essentials. Many rental platforms like Zillow and Apartments.com recommend using a checklist to avoid forgetting essentials.

Bar chart shows essential items by room: Bedroom (6), Bathroom (9), Kitchen (8), Living room (5), Often forgotten (7). Various colors.

To make packing easier, you can download the printable first apartment essentials checklist (PDF).

Bedroom Essentials

You’ll need to rest after a long moving day.

  • Mattress

  • Bedsheets and pillows

  • Bed frame or box spring

  • Nightstand

  • Hangers or dresser

  • Curtains or blinds

Bed with white and gray pillows, gray throw, lamp on nightstand, and a cardboard box with clothes. Warm, cozy bedroom setting.

Bathroom Must-Haves

Having these items ready will prevent inconvenient runs to the store.

Cleaning supplies in a bathroom include a spray bottle labeled "Multipurpose Cleaner," brush, plunger, paper towels, soap, and toilet paper.

  • Paper towels or reusable cloths

  • Trash can

You’ll be able to prepare simple meals or enjoy takeout comfortably with:

Living Room Basics

Starting with a few simple items will help your apartment feel like home:

  • Couch or seating

  • Coffee table or small surface

  • TV or laptop setup

  • Lamps or soft lighting

Move-In Day Essentials People Often Forget

When I moved into my first dorm, the hardest things to remember were the small items you do not realize you need until you arrive.

  • Extension cords

  • Phone charger

  • Trash bags

  • Cleaning wipes

  • Can opener

  • Box cutter

Final Thoughts
